Athletic contests involves running, jumping and throwing some objects like marveling. His are some of the oldest of all sports in the world. According to international association of athletic a body that regulates sports, it classifies athletic into various disciplines: track and field athletics, road running race, race walking, all cross country races, and mountain climbing. It is good to note that all forms of the athletics are individually based sports with the exception of only relay races. These disciplines are explained further below.
CATEGORIES ATHLETIC SPORTS
Track and field races emerged in the 19th century and were normally they involved competition between athletes who represented educational rival institutions and sports clubs. Men and women were allowed to compete separately to enhance equality and uniformity. Track and field games comes in both indoor level and outdoor forms, with most indoor races being in winter while the outdoor events were mostly held in summer. Several running events are held on this tracks and they fall into three categories namely sprints, middle-distance and the long-distance track events. On side of Relay races their teams comprises four runners each and whom must pass a baton to their team-mate after a covering a specified distance with main goal of being the first team to finish.
The field events are in two types i.e. jumping and throwing contests. During throwing events, athletes are evaluated by how far they hurl. There are also four common jumping games: the long jump and triple jump which are evaluated within the horizontal distance an athlete can jump, while the high jump and pole vault involves on the height athlete achieves.
Running Races Events
Road running races involve events which are predominantly long distance and they are normally conducted on courses of paved roads. The major events of this race often finish on the track of a main stadium for all. Marathon is one of this popular types of athletic. Road racing events can be of varying distance but the well-known are the marathon, 10 km and half marathon. The sport of road running originated in the activities of male servants who used to run alongside the carriages of aristocrats around the 18th century, and whom also ran the errands over distances for their masters. Foot racing contestants evolved from wagers between aristocrats, who pitted their footman against those of other in order to determine a winner.
Cross country running is the most realistic and naturalistic of all the sports in athletics since the competition takes place over surfaces such as on grass and on earth. Cross country race is both an individual as well as team sport since the runners are judged based on individual and at some points scoring methods are used for teams. The first recorded instance for an organized cross country competition was in England where this sport gained a lot of popularity in British and up to date the sport has retained its status at the scholastic level especially in the United Kingdom.
Race walking is another form of competitive walking which usually takes place at open-air roads. This the only sport in athletics whereby judges monitors athletes on their walking techniques One of the rule of this game is that the race walkers must always keep the foot in contact with the ground and their advancing leg should be straightened, and not bent at the knee .
Race walking evolved from the sports of pedestrianism which originated in England. Spectators gambled on the outcome of the walking competitors. The sport took on perseverance aspect and competitions were held over very long distances and walkers would have to achieve a certain distance within a specified time frame.
